Inflow & Infiltration
June 19, 2025
The Wells RSD will be conducting I&I testing on our Murray and Liberty Center systems in July 2025. This will involve a harmless smoke test that is used to identify sources of inflow and infiltration of cleanwater into the sewer system.
During the smoke test you may see smoke coming from building vent stacks, holes the ground, or other locations. Do not alarmed and do not call the Police or the Fire Department unless you are sure there is true emergency.
Homeowners Responsibilities:
-
Prior to testing date, pour 1/2 gallon water in every basement floor drain and a seldom used sink/shower drains. Also flush any seldom used toilets.
The test smoke is:
- NON-Toxic
- White / Gray in color
- Leaves no residue
- Does not pose a fire hazard
Smoke should not enter your home during the smoke test unless you have defective plumbing or dry drain traps. If smoke enters your home after properly preparing your plumbing as described earlier, this indicates that DANGEROUS SEWER GAS could regularly be entering your home.
If this happens:
- Note the source of the smoke
- Open several windows for ventilation
- Remove people and pets from building until the smoke has cleared
- Immediately notify test crew or call 260-353-1616 if you cannot locate a test crew
IMPORTANT
If there are any of the following in building please contact us before the smoke test:
- Individuals with respiratory problems
- Individuals who are immobile
- Pets who are confined and unattended
